New Federal Cabinet: What’s Next

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce his new cabinet today. Early indications suggest a more streamlined structure, with a smaller core group of senior ministers focused on key portfolios.

Retail Council of Canada is prepared to launch formal outreach to all newly appointed ministers and their staff to reinforce our ongoing advocacy priorities and plan our engagement going forward.

Last week, RCC wrote to the Prime Minister to reiterate our key Vote Retail priorities. We expect a busy legislative agenda in the coming months, beginning with a Speech from the Throne later this month, followed potentially by a federal budget and key legislation on the carbon tax and interprovincial trade barriers.

Tariffs remain the number one issue for retailers and will continue to be a central focus for both RCC and the federal government. In addition, we will stay active on a range of important files, including retail crime, immigration and labour, environmental sustainability, food safety, forced labour, supply chains, competition, and privacy policy.
